Boudoir is for every body

Some time back, I heard from a photographer who for a long time assumed that the reason potential clients were hesitant to book is because of price. Boudoir photoshoots and products aren’t cheap — they’re definitely an investment, and many clients have to save for a while or take advantage of no-interest financing (like we offer via PayPal credit) for it to be affordable. And while price can be a barrier for some, an interesting thing happened when that same photographer posted a poll on her Instagram asking her followers what their biggest obstacle was to booking a shoot.

Far and away, the most common obstacle was a negative body image.

“I don’t look like those girls,” or “I don’t like my body,” or “I could never look good in those outfits and poses.” Sound familiar?

I recently worked with a super-fit CrossFit athlete. She described herself as “boxy” and said that for a long time, she was self-conscious because she isn’t tall and skinny like a lot of her friends. We produced images like this:

Back in 2019, I photographed a woman who had struggled with negative body image her whole life, and prior to her photoshoot had lost nearly 100 pounds. She wanted to do a photoshoot because — in her words — “I’m learning to love my body.” We produced photos like this (cropped for anonymity):

The lesson is that there is no “ideal” body type for boudoir. I started photographing boudoir because I believe it’s an opportunity to learn to love your body, to stop picking yourself apart for whatever wrinkles and creases and folds and whatever else you might have. I can’t say it enough: beauty is not the absence of those things. Beauty happens when you allow your personality to shine and learn love your body. Maybe you still have healthy fitness goals; the above client wanted to lose another 100lbs. And that’s totally okay! But she dove into a photoshoot exactly as she was at that moment.

I can tell you from experience that self-confidence is not a pot of gold at the end of some weight loss rainbow. The sooner you learn to love yourself, the easier it will be to establish healthy, positive habits like healthy eating and exercise. Those things, after all, should be about feeling your best and being healthy — not chasing some idealistic body image. You don’t need that!

Is price still a barrier? That’s why we offer no-interest financing as well as a variety of collections for a range of budgets. And if you book your summer photoshoot between now and Mother’s Day, you can save an extra 10% with the code MOTHERSDAY.

So, now that you know boudoir is about accepting and loving yourself, and we’ve made it easier to afford the investment than ever, are you ready to take the dive? There’s no time like the present. We can’t wait to make beautiful, empowering art with you!
