Posing tip of the week: don't overcomplicate it

Great posing is without question an absolutely essential part of creating memorable, stunning photos. And while there are definitely bendy, twisty poses that require a fair bit of strength and flexibility, very often the best poses can be achieved with simple expressions, a little arm work, and a shift of the hips.

Here’s one of my favorite pictures of Shelbi from a recent boudoir photoshoot in my Tulsa studio:

This pose is about as simple as it gets, and it suits a wide variety of body types. Shelbi crosses her left leg in front of her right, then shifts her weight to her right hip and pushes her hips back just a bit. Then she simply folds her arms in a relaxed fashion, and presto! Well… almost. It’s really her facial expression that sells the pose, and there is a simple trick to these types of expressions: always breathe through your mouth! That’s right, what is in most cases a social faux pas is not only acceptable but ideal when you’re posing. Breathing through the mouth relaxes the jaw and the surrounding muscles in the cheeks, leading to a relaxed, sensual look.

In future posts I’ll cover some more complicated poses, but it’s important to know that it’s totally fine if you lack the experience, strength, or flexibility to hit “advanced” poses; very often, the most striking poses in a boudoir shoot are poses that anyone can achieve with a little guidance.

Of course when you shoot with us, we’ll walk you through every single pose step by step - no experience required! Book your shoot online in minutes, and let’s create some beautiful art!
